How it works

Minoxidil 5% widens the small vessels feeding each follicle and lengthens the growth phase; finasteride 0.3% lowers DHT at the scalp so follicles stop shrinking, with less systemic exposure than the oral tablet. Tretinoin, a vitamin A derivative, increases skin-cell turnover and has been shown to boost absorption of topical minoxidil, which is why the two are often combined.

Topical minoxidil 2% and 5% are FDA-approved; the finasteride and tretinoin components and the combination are compounded and used off-label. Compounded products are not FDA-approved.

Dosing & Titration

Apply 1 mL (the prescribed number of sprays) once daily to dry scalp where hair is thinning, spread gently, then wash your hands. Let it dry before styling or lying down and keep it off the forehead and hairline, where tretinoin can irritate. One 30 mL bottle lasts 30 days. Give it three to six months of daily use before judging results, and continue to maintain them.

Key benefits

  • Tretinoin improves minoxidil absorption for a stronger response from the same 5% dose
  • Topical finasteride 0.3% lowers scalp DHT with less systemic exposure than tablets
  • Light, fast-drying spray that fits a morning or evening routine
  • Our best-value 30-day spray at $119
  • Prescribed and followed up by licensed U.S. providers, 100% online

Who it's for

Boost Spray is for men and women with pattern thinning who have a clear, non-irritated scalp and want a topical rather than an oral treatment, or who want to add a topical to Core Tab or Daily Strip. Women are prescribed it only after acknowledging pregnancy precautions; women of any age can use finasteride-free Sensitive Spray instead.

It is not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If your scalp is already dry, flaky or sensitive, Scalp+ Spray or Sensitive Spray may suit you better. Scarring alopecia, alopecia areata, frontal fibrosing alopecia and hair loss from an active scalp infection need in-person evaluation.

What to expect, month by month

Month 1. Daily use begins. Mild dryness or flaking from tretinoin is common at first and usually settles; hair changes come later.

Month 2. Minoxidil may push resting hairs out ahead of new growth, so shedding can briefly increase. It's temporary.

Months 3–4. Shedding slows and fine, short new hairs appear at the hairline or part. Many people see less scalp showing through.

Months 6–12. Visible thickening for most by six months, continuing through the first year with daily use. Results depend on continued use.

Frequently asked questions

Answers from the GobyMeds care team. Still have a question? Your provider can answer it during your online visit.

How does Boost Spray work?

Boost Spray combines minoxidil 5% and topical finasteride 0.3% with a low dose of tretinoin (0.015%). Tretinoin increases skin turnover and helps minoxidil penetrate to the follicle, which research suggests can improve the response to minoxidil. It's our enhanced-absorption standard for men and for women who have completed the pregnancy acknowledgment.

Will the tretinoin irritate my scalp?

Some dryness, flaking or mild redness is common in the first few weeks and usually settles. Apply to a dry scalp, avoid the hairline and forehead, and skip a day if irritation builds. If it persists, your provider can move you to Scalp+ Spray or Sensitive Spray, which include ingredients to calm the scalp.

How long does treatment take to work?

Most people notice less shedding by month three and early regrowth between months three and six, with continued thickening through the first year of consistent daily use. Six months is the first fair checkpoint, and photos taken in the same light every month are the best way to track progress. Results depend on continued use: if you stop, hair loss gradually returns.

Will my hair shed more when I start?

It can. Minoxidil pushes resting hairs out to make room for new growth, so shedding may briefly increase around weeks two to eight. It's temporary and a normal sign the treatment is working. Contact your provider if shedding is severe or continues past month three.

Do I need labs or an in-person doctor visit?

No labs are required. You complete an online assessment, upload a photo ID and a few scalp photos, and a licensed U.S. provider reviews everything. Follow-ups are included, and your provider can switch you to a different formula if your scalp doesn't tolerate the first one.

Should I choose an oral or a topical treatment?

Oral options (Core Tab, Daily Strip) are a once-daily tablet or strip and act throughout the body. Topical sprays are applied to the scalp, which limits how much medication enters the bloodstream, a common reason people choose them, but they require a daily application routine and can irritate sensitive skin. Many patients combine an oral and a topical; your provider will recommend a plan that matches your pattern of loss.

Can GLP-1 weight-loss medication cause hair loss?

Hair thinning was reported in the Wegovy® trials (about 3% vs 1% on placebo) and the Zepbound® trials (4–5% vs 1%), more often in women. It's generally linked to rapid weight loss rather than the drug itself, usually starts a few months into treatment and often improves as weight stabilizes. Minoxidil-based treatments can speed recovery, and a finasteride-free spray is appropriate for women of any age.

Can women use a spray that contains finasteride?

Topical finasteride products are prescribed to women only after acknowledging pregnancy precautions. Finasteride can cause birth defects, so women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, planning a pregnancy or not using reliable contraception should not use or handle these sprays. Women of any age can start with Sensitive Spray, our finasteride-free formula.

Which types of hair loss can't be treated online?

Scarring alopecia, alopecia areata, frontal fibrosing alopecia and hair loss from an active scalp infection need in-person evaluation. If your photos or history suggest one of these, your provider will tell you, point you to the right kind of care, and you won't be charged.

How do I apply the spray?

Part dry or towel-dried hair and apply the prescribed number of sprays directly to the thinning areas of the scalp, spreading it gently with a fingertip. Wash your hands afterward, and let it dry completely before styling or lying down. One 30 mL bottle is a 30-day supply at the standard once-daily dose; a 60 mL bottle lasts 60 days.

What is your cancellation and refund policy?

If a GobyMeds provider decides a prescription isn't appropriate for you, you receive a 100% refund of the medication price (lab fees, where they apply, are not refunded). Once your order has been sent to our medical partners or to the pharmacy for fulfillment we will do our best to accommodate changes or cancellations, but we can't guarantee them, and in some cases an adjustment or cancellation carries a $50 medical consultation fee.

Because of regulations covering prescription medication, we are unable to accept returned medication for a refund.

Do I need insurance, and can I use my HSA or FSA?

No insurance is needed and GobyMeds does not bill insurance. The price you see is the price you pay, with provider consultation and shipping included and no membership fee.

HSA and FSA cards are accepted at checkout, and we can provide a letter of medical necessity if your plan administrator asks for one.

How does the online visit work?

You answer a short health questionnaire and upload a photo ID. A licensed U.S. provider reviews your history, confirms the treatment is appropriate, and writes the prescription. There is no video call to schedule unless your provider or your state requires one, and follow-up messaging with your care team is included with every plan.

If you're not a candidate, you'll be told why and refunded in full.

Important safety information

Side effects and precautions

Minoxidil may cause scalp irritation, itching, dryness, temporary increased shedding, unwanted facial or body hair and, rarely, changes in blood pressure or heart rate. Tretinoin commonly causes some dryness, flaking or redness in the first weeks and increases sun sensitivity of treated skin. Topical finasteride can produce the same effects reported with the oral tablet in some people: decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, breast tenderness or mood changes.

Finasteride can cause birth defects; women who are pregnant or may become pregnant must not take, handle or be exposed to finasteride, including topical products. The FDA has noted reports of the same side effects seen with oral finasteride in some people using compounded topical products.

Who should not use it

Do not use Boost Spray if you are pregnant, may become pregnant or are breastfeeding, or if you've reacted to minoxidil, finasteride or tretinoin. Do not apply to broken, sunburned or eczema-affected skin, and avoid combining with other retinoids on the scalp. Tell your provider about heart disease or low blood pressure. Compounded drug products are not approved or evaluated for safety, effectiveness or quality by the FDA. Prescription only; not available in all states.
